Sphinx and Temple Ruins - Egypt

Thumbnail pages:  Pyramids | Sphinx | Sharm el Sheikh | Tourist stuff

The Sphinx as seen through some of the ruins from the Temple of the Sphinx. Most of the Temple lies downhill from the Sphinx and so is below the ground level of the Sphinx. The figure of sphinxes occur repeatedly through ancient Egyptian culture, they have the body of a crouching lion and the head of a man. This most famous and by far the largest such sculpture is attributed to the pharaoh Kharfe whose pyramid lies behind. The head of the Sphinx is said to have the facial features of the pharaoh himself.
