Third Pyramid, Giza - Egypt

Thumbnail pages:  Pyramids | Sphinx | Sharm el Sheikh | Tourist stuff

The pyramid of Menkaura is the third highest of the three pyramids on the Giza plateau on the outskirts of Cairo. The most noticeable feature is the cladding around the base of pink granite blocks that reaches part-way up the pyramid. It's not certain whether or not this actually reached all the way up the pyramid, there's not enough blocks sitting at the base to cover it, however, with granite being a more "premium" rock than the limestone that the most of the pyramid is made of, it may well have been carried away in the past for other purposes. There have been a few thousand years for this to happen, after all.
