Great Pyramid - Egypt

Thumbnail pages:  Pyramids | Sphinx | Sharm el Sheikh | Tourist stuff

The entrance to the Great Pyramid, although actually the way in is down the bottom towards the right. You can go into the pyramid for a small fee - is it worth it? Well, I've done it and it's worth it to say I've done it. However the experience is pretty unpleasant. There's a very low ceiling about 1m high or so, so you're bent double, the slope is steep, say 1 in 2 and it gets even hotter and stuffier and more claustrophobic as you go in. The passage is narrow and you're looking at the backside of the person in front of you, while someone else is looking at yours, stopping for a rest or quiet panic is not really an option.

That you are dependent on some fairly feeble artificial light is an ever-present reality as is the fact that there are millions of tonnes of rock above you. Eventually you get to a point where you can stand though and there are spacious chambers. I remember thinking the walk out was far more preferable to the walk in. It was intended as a tomb remember, not an interactive experience!
