Sphinx and Temple Ruins - Egypt

Thumbnail pages:  Pyramids | Sphinx | Sharm el Sheikh | Tourist stuff

The sphinx itself is carved out of a single piece of stone and is one of the largest monoblock statues in the world. Much of the stone used in the construction of the sphinx temple in the foreground came from digging out the ground around the block of stone that was to become the sphinx. Some of these blocks weigh 200 tonnes or more.
